Coronavirus (1437) Caution is needed as Hospital acquired covid infections are being reported, still It is a good thing that the pandemic appears to be in retreat. As more and more countries relax covid-19 restrictions and societies return to free society behaviours, reports emerging from many of these countries seem to indicate that hospitals which are by nature enclosed spaces need to be more cautious as they approach the policy. Coronavirus (1432) How a few poorly designed COVID-19 studies may have contributed to misinformation in Brazil Interesting short paper from Brazilian authors who 'briefly discuss how a small set of exceptionally poorly designed studies disseminated through the press, weeks or months before publication and without access to the data sets used to generate these studies for a more thorough assessment, played into a cycle of misinformation in Brazil in the first year of the pandemic.' The paper focuses on chloroquine, ivermectin and nitrazoxanide. Citation, extracts and a comment from me below. |

Coronavirus (1432) US Insurer Spending on Ivermectin Prescriptions for COVID-19 (2) I am not surprised, this sad news shows how far the damage from misinformation and anti-science sentiments went since this pandemic. A lot of damage has been done to the successes of the Evidence Based Practice movement before the pandemic. Reversing the negative trend will take a lot of effort which should be promoted on a global level. |

Coronavirus (1431) US Insurer Spending on Ivermectin Prescriptions for COVID-19 With thanks to Global Health Now. Comment from me below. 'About $130 million was spent on Ivermectin prescriptions over a 12-month period, researchers have found - suggesting that US insuurers heavily subsidized the costs of the drug despite its ineffectiveness to treat COVID-19.' Coronavirus (1429) Axios news: The Biden administration has a COVID credibility crisis This news item demonstrates that even a high-income country such as the US has difficulty in delivering effective COVID-19 health communications to the general population. Part of the problem is the evolving science, and part is the evolving virus, with new variants having different characteristics to previous ones. Below is the opening section of the article (with thanks to Global Health News). |
