Coronavirus (23) Use of masks (3)
Dear All, I can only imagine if it is difficult to obtain masks for Covid 19 droplet prevention in the UK it must be much more difficult in Zambia. [*see notes below] Please see attached instructions for making a mask that you can insert a filter into e.g. from hoover bags which can protect against particles. Down to 3 micron in size. What I do know is that the masks could be adopted as a cottage industry at the very least for healthcare workers. Kind regards Tom Browne

Coronavirus (21) Use of masks (2)
The WHO and others have been consistent in their recommendations on mask use by the public including their reinforcement of that message today. This new recommendation by Dr Gao and others in Asia is opinion since the biggest issue with the "data" we get from those areas really has no denominator and except for South Korea, has no transparency. Having said that, WHO's recommendation is based on hospital data from the 90's from other droplet transmitted viruses in hospital settings. Gowns and masks added little to gloves and hand washing in transmission studies in hospital settings.

Coronavirus (22) Misinformation (5) Facebook Live Q & A session
Dear all, I agree, there are a lot of COVID19 related myths, lies, misinformation etc. There is a Facebook Live Q & A session with an infectious disease doctor (Dr Hachaambwa) this week, Thursday April 2, 2020 noon Zambian time. Feel free to share. I think it would be a good opportunity for people to get some clarifications, ask questions etc https://www.facebook.com/poherusa/

Coronavirus (19)
I agree with you sir. [Chindongo, Zambia] The only way out at the moment is to treat everyone as a potential carrier of the virus. If resources were sufficient, it would be nice to carryout mandatory testing for everyone so as to isolate cases and bring the infection under control. Meanwhile, all other infection prevention measures should continue being enforced.

Coronavirus (18) Misinformation (4)
Hi Ben, [Ben Margetts, Zambia: http://www.hifa.org/dgroups-rss/coronavirus-12-misinformation-3 ) Thank you for highlighting the problem of misinformation on social media. Maybe the MoH could use social media to send reliable information? Would anyone like to comment? Perhaps we have HIFA-Zambia members at the MoH who are already considering this? I am actually not sure if MoHs are doing this effectively in other countries - I shall try to find out and get back to you.

Coronavirus (17)
Dear All, To my knowledge, Zambia is in 'lockdown' for at least two weeks, in the first instance? This is a very frightening time for the whole nation. One of the saddest things is the lack of available government cushioning for employees, especially the self-employed. We are, therefore, very grateful to our grant funders, Scottish Government, for their understanding regarding flexible use of remaining end of year grant funds. Thank you Kindest regards Jo

Coronavirus (15) Public health education and communication (2)
Well said [Flata Mwale, Zambia], it needs to be taken a lot more seriously. I have been sent lots of messages from family and friends in zambia who feel they are safe because they have hand sanitiser. This is the wrong message and sadly the businesses are capitalising on this with ridiculous price increases of hand sanitiser. Soap and water should be encouraged more so as not to push those that cant afford into unnecessary worry.

Coronavirus (15)
I totally agree. Zambia needs to do more than what has been put in place for. From the time this disease began to be recorded in Africa, the country would have put strict measures on the ports of entry but all advise from different stakeholders were not seen as being serious. From 2 cases now on 22 cases the government is now doing what would have been done from inception where there were no cases at all.

[Note from HIFA-Zambia moderator - Apologies - I mistakenly sent Chindongo's message a few minutes ago as if it were from me.] I totally agree. Coronavirus (12) Misinformation (3)
Hi Neil, It appears to be driven by fear, or people trying to spread fear, and mainly coming though WhatsApp and Facebook. I am being forwarded messages and sent Facebook posts daily to ask ‘is this true?’ - almost all are false rumours such as: - COVID-19 remains airborne for 24 hours and there is no way of protecting yourself - all truck drivers are being detained in quarantine at borders - shared ‘official press releases from MoH’ with completely inaccurate information --

Coronavirus (13) COVID-19 posters (3) Child-friendly health education resources
Dear Yina, Healthy Learners and the MoH approves new materials yesterday that are child friendly. They will be translated into multiple languages this week, and On Call Africa are helping to get them adapted for communication difficulties. I’d be happy to share, but can’t attach in this thread and they are not online yet. Please feel free to email direct Ben at oncallafrica.org Getting them remote communities will be a challenge but I think I am right in saying that they will go through district health offices and be distributed with medicines.
